LOCAL AREA

Galary is a small hamlet by the river Coudoulous, in a valley full of apple orchards. Normally very quiet but busier in July and August as it is a popular area for people of Montpellier and Nimes to come and enjoy the 'Mountain air' (1,400 ft above sea level).

The local market town, Le Vigan is 6km away. It has two supermarkets, and a good range of smaller shops. It has a Saturday market which is worth a visit for local produce such as goats cheese, honey, herbs, sweet chestnut products, as well as local crafts. Local restaurants are not Michelin four star but have good country food.

Nimes and Montpellier are approximately 50km away, thriving with sophisticated centres and worth a visit to admire carefully restored historic quarters and a variety of new buildings and urban design.

This is an area of unspoilt old-fashioned countryside with fasinating history. Part of the National Park of Cevennes it is marvellous country for walking, cycling, river bathing and canoeing. The variety of wild flowers and mushrooms is extraordinary. Most of the nearby villages are built in local stone dating back to medieval times. There are some notable Romanesque churches.
