WELCOME to La Porte de Carcassonne - our accommodation in Carcassonne, the medieval city.

We are sure that if you know France then you will certainly know, or have heard of Carcassonne. It is a town of about 45,000 inhabitants in the Region of Languedoc Roussillon, on the River Aude and Canal du Midi. From the Bastide Saint-Louis to the medieval Walled City, Carcassonne offers a wealth of monuments to visit and discover!

The Bastide (later town) is only 12 minutes walk over the old bridge where there are many restaurants, shops and a market 3 times a week. There are cafes, restaurants and shops nearby. There is also free local transport between La Cite, nearby, and Bastide St Louis during the main tourist season.

So that you will feel completely at home during your stay in Carcassonne, everything that you expect to find in your own home is provided.  (Please let us know if we have missed anything!)  Basics, like cooking salt and dried herbs, are provided so that you do not need to buy a packet / jar when you only need a pinch.  You are welcome to help yourself to anything you need.  All we ask is that you replace anything that you finish so that the next guests to occupy the house can enjoy the same amenities.

Accommodation:

The house has tiled floors throughout and is furnished in French style.  Electric convector heaters provide warmth in the cooler months. Parking is available “on street” outside of the house.

Living Room -  with  HiFi system (radio, CD & tapes), DVD player & viewer, games and books.

The Living Room leads into the Dining Room and Kitchen.  From there, you have access to a large courtyard which is filled with small trees and plants, an outdoor grill, a sun canopy, table and chairs so that you can enjoy the ambience of outdoor dining “al fresco“.

The polished wooden staircase leads to two double bedrooms.  The main bedroom overlooks the street and the room at the rear looks out onto the walls of the medieval city.

A shower room, including a washing machine, with wash hand basin and toilet is on the ground floor and is accessed from the staircase area.

We regret that animals are not permitted and we operate a No Smoking policy.

LOCAL AREA

Carcassonne invites you to discover its history, its local cuisine, its wines, or simply enjoy the scenery.  You can take a leisurely stroll and be charmed by the buildings and the people you'll meet along the way; or you can be accompanied by the interpretive guides from the Tourist Office.

There are many places to visit in the area, including Beziers, Pezenas (for antiques), Perpignan, Montpellier, the vineyards of Minervois and Corbierres, the Montagne Noir (30 minutes), the Pyrenees of the Ariege and Andorra (for skiing, walking and climbing), and of course the beach is less than one hour away at Narbonne, to name just a few places.  The wine, fruit and many local festivals are also waiting for you.

Independent Comment

The key feature of this homely terraced property is the location – just below the majestic medieval “Cité” with a great view of the fortifications from one of the bedrooms, but importantly well away from the main entrance and tourist traffic. It is also only 10 minutes walk from the bastide town centre – a most convenient base for exploring Carcassonne and only 5 minutes walk from the best bars/restaurants which are in the Cité. There is ample space for 4 in this well equipped and comfortably furnished character property with a large master bedroom, good sized downstairs bathroom and cozy ground floor living area. Excellent spacious private courtyard terrace which enjoys both sun and shade for dining “en terasse” and relaxing.
