The area is of astounding beauty with opportunities to take part in almost any activity. Artists, photographers, cyclists, windsurfers, walkers, the list goes on and on, can all find almost perfect conditions for their chosen hobby or sport.
The region boasts 312 days of sunshine; 300 days of wind and Font Romeu (90 mins drive away) is listed as the sunniest ski resort in Europe.
The house is situated perfectly for taking advantage of what the region has to offer.
The house
Sits perched right next to the church, level with its roof and bell tower! Don’t worry about the bells; amazingly it really isn’t a problem. Access might be though. Cars have to be parked either below in the Place De La Republic (except when festivals are on!) or about 50m away in the car park.
The house is really intended for couples but there is accommodation for 4. (Mezzanine floor above bedroom). The house really is different but it’s not for everyone. The drop over the wall to the Place De La Republic and the climb from the car park could certainly put many off. But the there are at least 6 bars/ restaurants within a 2-minute walk and one (The Catalan) can be heard opening in the morning (unless it’s timed to coincide with the bells!).
A short walk from the house (150m), there is a barbeque/storage/picnic/sunbathing area with excellent views of Pico Neulos, Canigou and the Belvedere tower with sun all day long.
2 mountain bikes are available.
LOCAL AREA
Laroque is situated 4 miles inland from Argeles nestling in the foothills of the Pyrenees on the Alberes plain. The Spanish border is a few kilometres away.
Mount Canigou dominates this corner of France and views of the mountain and its smaller brother (Pico Neous) are staggering from Laroque. The Alberes plain with the Alberes forest and Pico Neous make probably the best walking and mountain biking in Europe. Laroque is exactly in the centre of all this.
Laroque Des Alberes (Laroca) is without doubt Catalan. It is made up of two distinct areas, the old part and the ancient. Sauntering around the ancient part is a pastime in itself (the quaint bars also help). It’s still a working French town/ village obviously helped by the tourist trade but certainly not spoilt in any way by it.
